Meet Kanitha

Kanitha Matoury's journey unfolded as a first-generation immigrant from Cambodia who arrived in the U.S. during her teenage years. At age 20, she enlisted as an Air Force reservist where she learned the importance of punctuality, teamwork and service. Seeking further knowledge led her to San Francisco State, where she majored in Finance, laying the foundation for a future shaped by both business acumen and a genuine passion for community welfare.

Kanitha's journey in Oakland began with wearing many hats as an entrepreneur. From founding and managing the Spice Monkey Restaurant & Bar to Howden Market and becoming a Real Estate Syndicator. Best known for her hospitality and free spirited personality, she has spent the past 17 years cultivating communities and experiencing the highs and lows of running a brick and mortar business in Oakland.

As Kanitha embarks on a journey into public service, her priorities align with bringing back the heartbeat of Oakland. Her priorities are to enhance safety, boost the local economy, and foster a greater sense of well-being within the community.

Kanitha believes that local businesses are the heartbeat and soul of any city.

“Small and local businesses are the backbone of a vibrant and thriving community, enhancing economic stability and the quality of life for residents.

As your At-Large city council representative, I will champion policies that support and nurture our small and local businesses, recognizing their essential role in our community's well-being and future growth.”
